MAMATER now a Fairtrade Registered Goldsmith in the UK

I am very pleased to announce that as of 23rd September 2020, MAMATER is a registered Fairtrade Goldsmith in the UK. As an ethical jeweller, we are committed to creating beautiful jewellery made with ethically sourced and traded materials. Our official registration will enable us to access more transparent supply chains, ensuring that we have access to more transparent supply chains and are able to improve the traceability of our materials and jewellery pieces.

Why Fairtrade Gold?

Fairtrade Gold is sourced exclusively from small-scale mines which meet the Fairtrade Gold Standard; an internationally recognised marker of best-practice for workers’ rights and environmental protection.

Workers in Fairtrade certified gold mines receive a guaranteed Fairtrade Minimum Price for their product. Fairtrade certified mines are audited by FLOCERT to check they meet the Standard.

Fairtrade certification aims at banning all forms of conflict minerals from the gold supply chain, so that the gold trade does not fuel instability and conflict in mining areas. At the same time, Fairtrade supports artisanal and small scale miner cooperatives to acquire legal status for their operations and enables miners to act collectively against any form of discrimination.

Occupational safety is another concern: small-scale mining tends to involve work in dark, narrow tunnels with poor ventilation. The use of dynamite to crack gold-containing rocks, as well as toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide to refine gold, further exacerbate the dangerous working conditions. We work with cooperatives to reduce the amount of chemicals needed in gold extraction, to raise awareness for health and safety risks, and to ensure that proper safety equipment and policies are in place.

Beyond supporting in addressing these challenges, Fairtrade focuses on improving the livelihoods of small-scale gold producers.
